Last week I had the pleasure of seeing Lindi Ortega in concert when she performed at The Great Hall to celebrate the release of her new album Tin Star.
First though, Northcote opened up the show and I honestly couldn’t help but feel like I was at a Bryan Adams concert in the 90s.
Ortega is a country singer from Toronto that was drawn to Nashville. If you see her now you are bound to think she is a Nashville native, with her slight southern drawl and love for country. But nope, she is indeed Canadian and something to be proud of!
“This is my brand new guitar, I call him the ‘The big, black, sexy beast’… And I’ll tell you, last time I said that the barman thought I was talkin’ about him!”
I realize the association has been made many times before, but Ortega is truly a modern day Dolly Parton. True: they are separate artists to be judged on their own, different abilities. But their voices and their style are somewhat similar; her sassy attitude is what really reminds me of Dolly – and it comes off as extremely charming.
At one point she brought out her guitar and said: “This is my brand new guitar, I call him the ‘The big, black, sexy beast’… And I’ll tell you, last time I said that the barman thought I was talkin’ about him!” Or when she brought out her maraca dressed as Satan and introduced us to “her friend Satan!”
Irresistible character aside, Ortega’s voice shines in its flawlessness. I can practically see the eyes of label guys turning into dollar signs when they hear her voice.
I am not even that into country but Ms. Ortega sure won my heart over.
